The Supreme Court’s decision to curb birthright citizenship injunctions is a chilling betrayal of the Fourteenth Amendment and a calculated assault on the very notion of equal protection under the law and our justice system. It violates the entire purpose of our judicial branch, eradicates the rule of law, and challenges our democracy in a dark and insidious manner that strikes fear into millions across the U.S.
This ruling signals a dangerous lurch toward authoritarianism, where constitutional rights are no longer guaranteed by birth but selectively distributed by a political party. It is a grotesque distortion of justice that panders to xenophobic fears and emboldens anti-immigrant policies under the guise of “legal interpretation.”
Today’s ruling shows that the Supreme Court now operates as an explicit extension of Donald Trump’s political agenda, empowering Trump to escalate his anti-immigrant agenda with fewer legal checks and threatening the safety and dignity of our community across Colorado and the country.
Dusti Gurule, President and CEO of COLOR Action Fund, issued the following statement:
“If the Supreme Court thinks that eroding our foundational values to pander to the President is “justice,” they are gravely, seriously mistaken. We will not stand by as our democracy leans towards authoritarianism, as our constitutional rights are dismantled, and our communities continue to live in fear for simply living in “the land of the free.” This is a cruel, unjust action that threatens the lives of millions of Americans. We will fight back. We will not be silent.”
